Holiday binge eating and slow metabolism

To say that I’m excited for Christmas and the New Year would be an understatement. There is one thing that grinds my gears during this time of the year, though. You know what I’m talking about. Making the same New Year’s resolution about getting back into the gym and in shape.

You tell yourself it’s going to be different, but no matter how many times you drill it into your head the outcome is always the same. I’m not one to reference or echo the sentiments of notable figures to stake my claim, but Albert Einstein said it best, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results.”

Nevertheless, here we are.

Q: Eating healthy this time of the year is tough. I’m scared to lose all my progress, but I also want to indulge. What can I do to ensure I don’t fall off the wagon?

A: Don’t feel guilty. The indulging naturally picks up just due to the fact it’s that time of the year. Enjoy it. But at the same time a bit of dietary restraint shouldn’t be lost on you. Otherwise, things can spiral out of control in a hurry. Save it for when it matters. Have wholesome, nutritious meals throughout the day. Then, later in the evening (when you’re most likely to indulge) go at it.

Q: How come at the very beginning the weight comes off pretty easy. Then, it starts to slow down. Do I need to change things up to avoid a plateau?

A: I can’t definitively say no because there are indeed folks who have no idea what to do. With regards to your metabolism, it will understandably take a hit the further you go into weight loss. There are a few ways to sort of mitigate the drop in your daily energy expenditure, but it’s what inevitably happens.

In fact, this is the glaring issue with crash diets because sooner rather than later your body starts to fight back against weight loss particularly yo-yo dieters. As a result, their back singing the same old song. In general, adequate protein and maintaining an exercise regimen should be kept on the table regardless of what phase you’re in.
