Hopwood students win Education Day contests

Two Hopwood Middle School students were selected as winners of the Public School System’s Education Day logo and essay contests. Seventh grader Mira M. Reginio won the logo contest and 8th grader Destiny Pangelinan won the essay contest.
Reginio and Pangelinan both went up against entries from all PSS schools in the CNMI.
Education Commissioner Dr. Alfred Ada, PSS Human Resource staff, CNMI Board of Education member Andrew Orsini and vice chair Herman Atalig (Ind-Saipan), Rep. Edwin Propst (Ind-Saipan), and Rep. Tina Sablan presented the awards to the two winning students. HMS principal Dr. Rizalina Liwag also spoke in praise of both Reginio and Panglinan.
The 2020 State Teacher of the Year, Victor Cabrera, was also recognized with a plaque that memorializes his feat. Ada, who was the principal of William S. Reyes Elementary School when Cabrera first applied to become a second grade teacher at the school, said he knew that Cabrera has what it takes to become a teacher despite his lack of teaching experience.
Ada also said that that PSS and the board are working to find ways to get Hopwood back to its main campus in Chalan Laulau.
Orsini and Atalig both agreed with Ada’s statement, with both commending the students’ resilience for having classes in tents for one school year already.
“We hope to get the Hopwood campus back in time, and we will keep fighting for that to happen,” Orsini said.
Hopwood spent the remainder of the day, with all the other schools around the CNMI celebrating Education Day, which was supposed to be celebrated last Nov. 27, but was cancelled due to Tropical Storm Kammuri. School teachers and staff who were also nominated for recommendations as teacher and staff of the year were also recognized.
