5 students ‘win’ scholarships at CSO Scholarship Fair

One lucky student received a scholarship grant worth $3,000 from the CNMI Scholarship Office last Saturday, Nov. 30, as the celebration of November as CNMI Scholarship Month came to a close.
Harold Christopher L. Omotoy, an undergraduate junior taking Public Health Studies: Community Health at Portland State University, won the scholarship grant from the raffle that was held at the Scholarship Fair over the weekend at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe.
Four others—Bernicia Sablan of Kagman High School, Daniel Lizama from Rota, Chrizelle L. Omotoy (off-island but from Saipan), and Emilisa Norita of the University of Guam—each won $500.
The CSO Scholarship Fair brought students closer to scholarship providers, where the young members of the community were able to get information on the many programs available that could help make college affordable to students in the CNMI.
“I am here with a couple of my friends from Saipan Southern [High School] because colleges are expensive, the majority are expensive. We are here to get more information to apply for scholarships so when we go to college, we do not have to pay so much,” said Nehemiah Fernandez, student of Saipan Southern High School.
CSO administrator Rose Pangelinan Camacho said the monthlong celebration highlighted the power of scholarships and the people behind them.
“To get an education is a way to better the lives of the students and their families,” Camacho said.
“Families also have the burden of the financial expenses for the students going to school, as well as the students [themselves]. We hope that, after getting their education and training, they will have better lives, be able to get better, higher-paying jobs, and improve their lives and their families,” she added.
Present to answer the questions of students at the Scholarship Fair were Bank of Hawaii, Bank of Saipan, Department of Labor, Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality, Department of Public Works, Office of Congressman Gregorio Kilili, Northern Marianas College, Joeten Daidai Foundation, and Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance.
