Weight fluctuations and useful supplements

Like it or not, there are going to be days where you just don’t feel it. Roughly 20 minutes into my workout, I called it a day. Before stepping out, though, I tapped him on the shoulder.

“How’s your training going?” I asked.

“Just getting in what I can,” he said. As he was gathering himself, he continued, “Let me tell you, I don’t enjoy it as much, but I do it anyway.”

In a matter of seconds there I was, instead of hopping into my car and heading home I decided to add in some extra credit work. Although the image of popping a cold one with the game on was far more tempting than having to hoist up a barbell again, I’m glad I told my inner dialogue to shut up and get it done.

That’s the whole point: get it done.

Q: My weight keeps fluctuating. Every time I feel like I’m getting on track, the scale tells me otherwise. It’s frustrating and discouraging.

A: Instinctively, we recognize that to get from point A to point B it’s not going to be a straight line. Deep down we know that’s not how it works. There’s an ebb and flow. Yet, when we see it happening like that before our very own eyes we throw a fit. While the scale is a useful tool, many of us get bogged down by it.

Relax.

It’s only one metric, and its importance pales in comparison to the value of non-scale victories. If your clothes are fitting better, you’re looking visibly leaner, and you’re getting stronger, that’s progress.

Q: Beyond a protein supplement and maybe a multivitamin, what other supplements do you recommend?

A: The one supplement I think we should all be paying attention to is magnesium because just about everyone is deficient. And it’s hard to get it through your diet. Even a reasonably healthy one. It plays a vital role in nerve and muscle function, and there’s also strong evidence showing that low levels has an impact on blood pressure, carbohydrate metabolism, and sleep. I’m not saying it’s going to have a miraculous effect, but it’s worth the effort to look into it.
