TUMON, Guam—Guam Sports Events, Inc., organizers of the United Airlines Guam Marathon, unveiled a second mural at the Runners’ Oasis in Tumon to enhance the overall UGM experience.
The Runners’ Oasis is a multi-purpose space in front of the Pacific Islands Club parking garage where runners can park, stretch, meet with friends and cool down after a workout.
GSE, title sponsor United Airlines, and gold sponsors Pacific Islands Club and the Guam Visitors Bureau invite local and visiting runners to start and end their training at the Runners’ Oasis.
The new mural was designed and painted by local artist Austin Domingo and features Domingo’s signature lettering style and vibrant colors.
Domingo said, “The design behind the new UGM mural was inspired by the beauty we see on our island. The focal point of the design is the large ‘Guam Finisher’ text. The lettering design is mixed with arrows to represent moving forward, which ties in with the running aspect. Other parts of the design that are island-centric are the floral patterns and the vibrant colors, which were inspired by Guam’s sunsets and beaches.”
Guam Visitors Bureau president and CEO Pilar Laguaña noted that UGM attracts thousands of visitors from Guam’s source markets, and the new mural will add to their enjoyment. It will also help to promote the 2020 race to residents and visitors in Tumon.
Laguaña also said, “It is great to see businesses and organizations embrace public art displays as a way to beautify their properties. It contributes to the overall pride and beautification of our island.”
The space was developed to be a centralized location that allows runners to simulate the out and back course. It includes a space to stretch, benches to rest and a shower to rinse off.
Ben Ferguson, managing director and founder of GSE, said, “Each year, we try to add to the UGM experience. We hope the new mural inspires runners to continue their training and motivates them to keep moving forward to reach their goals. The Runners’ Oasis also serves as a safe and central meeting point for runners. PIC and UGM welcome runners to feel at home in this space and use it to enhance their training.”
UGM is scheduled for April 5, 2020 at the Gov. Joseph Flores Memorial Park (Ypao Beach) in Tumon. Registration is ongoing for the four race distances—5K, 10K, half marathon (13.1 miles), and marathon (26.2 miles). Over a thousand runners have already registered for the event. Event organizers encourage runners to register online at unitedguammarathon.com before midnight on Nov. 30 to take advantage of favorable rates. (PR)
