Officers of the Department of Public Safety will be on the lookout for drunk, drugged, and distracted drivers throughout this holiday season as part of its “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.

With the entire month of December proclaimed as “CNMI Drunk, Drugged, Drowsy, and Distracted Driving Prevention Month,” DPS urges the public to remember the hazards of impaired driving and to be vigilant against those who impaired while driving.

During yesterday’s proclamation signing at the Office of the Governor, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres said that DPS and its government partners will be out in force this holiday season to keep the CNMI roads safe through zero tolerance enforcement activities and providing the traditional Designated Driver programs.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign will be from Nov. 29, 2019, to Jan. 1, 2020.

From 2015 to the present, the CNMI recorded 347 alcohol-related crashes and nine alcohol-related traffic fatalities. CNMI also recorded 898 distracted driving crashes within the same period.

As part of the campaign, DPS promotes practices such as designating a sober driver, stopping impaired family members and friends from getting behind the wheel, reporting impaired drivers to law enforcement authorities, and practicing safe driving.
