Saipan Vegas’ do-it-all player Douglas Schmidt was named regular season most valuable player in the 2019 Atkins Kroll Marianas International Basketball League during a brief awards ceremony last Friday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Schmidt took the highest individual award in the inaugural league after getting 49.4 statistical points, which were based on the player’s overall statistics (combined points, rebounds, assists, and steals) team record, coaches’ votes, and Player of the Game honors. He led the league in assists (7.3 average per game) and steals (7.4) and also posted impressive numbers in scoring (15.8 points per game) and rebounds (7.5) and helped Saipan Vegas to a perfect 9-0 record in the elimination round.

The former national team player beat his teammate, Coby Santos, for the coveted MVP plum, as the latter registered 46.2 SPs. Both Schmidt and Santos made it to the Mythical Team Selection, joining IT&E’s Errol Peredo (35.8 SPs), The Game’s Mak Mintac (43.5), and Mystique Grillers’ Jetzen Jandoc (44.2).

Atkins Kroll vice president and general manager Clark Boswell, with the assistance of MIBL officials, handed the MVP trophy to Schmidt and other awardees last weekend.

Besides earning a spot on the elite Mythical Five Selection, Mintac was also named the scoring champion after his average of 28.9 points per game. TanHoldings’ Michael Torregosa was handed the Board Master trophy for averaging 12.8 rebounds per match, while Bridge Capital’s Eric Deleon Guerrero took the Swat Chief award for having the most blocks (10) in the regular season.

All the awards received gift certificates and in-kind donations from the following MIBL sponsors: AK Toyota, Aqua Resort, Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan, The Game, Saipan Vegas, Caravan’s, and Bridge Capital.
