HANMI occupancy at 68% in October
The Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands reported a 68.24% average occupancy rate among its 11 member-hotels in October 2019. This is a 10% decrease for HANMI hotels compared to October 2018.
A total of 51,627 of 75,657 available room nights sold during the month, compared to 54,971 of 72,634 available room night sold last October. Average room rates were $143.93 compared to $145.46 last October.
In the hotel industry, 80% occupancy is considered average.
HANMI chair Gloria Cavanagh said the latest numbers show that the Marianas tourism economy is still anemic. She said everyone is looking forward to the start of direct flights between Japan and the Marianas by Skymark Airlines Inc. this month.
She hopes the CNMI government will give the Marianas Visitors Authority its full budget so it can continue to promote the CNMI in China and Korea.
HANMI is also concerned that the land leases of Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan and Hyatt Regency Saipan, which are expiring soon, have yet to be resolved. “If we are serious about economic sustainability, we cannot afford to lose these long-term investors, which would result in lost revenue, lost jobs, and loss of many other community benefits.”
HANMI was established in 1985. (PR)
