An inmate of the Department of Corrections prison in Susupe died yesterday, but there has been no word yet from the police on what caused the death and how the individual died.

The unnamed inmate was declared dead at the Commonwealth Health Center at 1:32pm by Dr. Rodney Classens.

The Department of Public Safety later released a statement saying the case remains ongoing and is pending next-of-kin notification.

The inmate’s gender and nationality was also not immediately learned.

The DPS statement said that a 911 call on Monday, Nov. 11, 2019, at about 12:40pm, reporting an unresponsive individual at the DOC. A police officer was sent to the scene.

At the scene the officer confirmed that the individual was unresponsive and notified DPS central to summon detectives.

Preliminary findings indicate that a corrections officer approached the victim’s cell to serve lunch. The corrections officer called out the victim’s name a few times and noticed that the individual was not responding. The corrections officer then went into the victim’s cell and saw the unresponsive victim. The corrections officer notified the on-duty controller, who then called 911. The victim was then brought to CHC where he was later pronounced dead.
