The Oceania Athletics Association has chosen Saipan anew to host one of the three regional championships next year.

The 2020 Oceania Micronesian Regional Championships will take place at the Oleai Sports Complex on June 12 and 13, while the Polynesian Championships will be held in Tonga and the Melanesian Championships will be hosted by Papua New Guinea.

It will be the second straight time that the CNMI will host the Micronesian Regional, as the biennial event took place on Saipan just last year. The CNMI Team, which was divided into two groups (Saipan and Tinian athletes) combined for 10 gold medals, 16 silvers, and 18 bronzes in the 2018 meet. The 2020 competition will be a good test event for the Commonwealth’s hosting of the 2021 Pacific Mini Games,

For next year’s regional meet, the CNMI, Guam, Palau, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Nauru can enter up to three athletes per event provided they have met the entry standards.

All entries must be submitted with verifiable results for all athletes. Failure to provide one may result in the entry not being accepted. OAA, however, would like to encourage federations to send more than the quota of athletes. Final entry deadline will be on April 7, 2020 for the Micronesian meet.

All Regional Championships will be contested in the following division: senior, under 18 (athletes born in 2003, 2004 and 2005), under 20 (athletes born in 2001 or 2002), masters (athletes at least 30 years of age), and para (athletes with a national classification).

Events lined up are as follows: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, 100m Hurdles, 110m Hurdles, 400m hurdles, long jump, triple jump, high jump, discus, hammer, javelin, shot put, and the 4x100m, 4x400m Relays, mixed 4x400m, and mixed medley relays.
