Parents got to watch their children play the piano and perform songs at the Harmonious Lesson 2019 3rd Quarter Piano and Voice Recital last week at the indoor theater of the American Memorial Park in Garapan.
The recital was part of the performances of the students of Katie Hoyt, a producer at Friends of the Arts. “They got to dress up and just be whatever character they want to be, and play songs,” Hoyt said.
“I like to have these recitals or performances for my students every other month, so that they have a goal to work toward and something to perform,” she added.
The children played Dark and Stormy Night, which is about Edgar Allan Poe, Demons by the rock band Imagine Dragons, and some Journey songs.
Hoyt uses her love for performing and playing, and for sharing her passion with children, as a way to get to know people, especially children. She believes it is important for young members of the community to learn music.
“It is a confidence builder,” Hoyt explained. “That is why I do the recitals. They have to have confidence in order to perform. It is just a good confidence builder and a release for them from their stress in life.”
One of the parents, Ellen Joy Dionisio, agrees.
“I believe that having a piano lessons while the children are young help stimulate their brain,” Dionisio said, “at the same time teaching them discipline, perseverance, self-confidence, time management, listening skills, and… their memory capacity.”
The children are set to have a holiday concert as their next recital on Dec. 14.
