Indigenous Expo reset to Nov. 9
The Indigenous Cultural Expo is back. This time, it will be even bigger, with a Kantan Isla Concert.
The expo, which will be held on Nov. 9, Saturday, from 9am to 9pm at the Guma Sakman at the Civic Center in Susupe will feature 12 hours of pure Chamorro and Carolinian traditions.
The expo will showcase seafaring traditions, traditional food and medicines (with free tastings), traditional coconut products and use, native agricultural techniques, bull cart ride (free rides), cultural performances, and language and culture, and eve a petting zoo.
The cultural expo will also feature Kantan Isla.
“Kantan Isla is promotion of local music,” said Indigenous Affairs Office director Roman Tudela Jr. “We are going to be having performers throughout the expo. We are trying to see if we can get the youth involved. It is about our local music.”
Tudela, who is also a musician, aspires to get the CNMI youth involved in local music, so the younger generations can continue with the tradition.
“We have been doing this for years as musicians, but we are trying to see our fruits from our work, what we have done and what have we passed on. This is something that we want as musicians. We want to make sure that we promote them [among the youth],” Tudela added. That way, the youth can start taking over for the elders.
At around 3pm, the community can also get their stomachs full with traditional food such as root crops, roast pig, beef, cooked fish, among others that will be served during a traditional fiesta.
“We have gone big last year. We want to make sure that what we had last year, we have this year [too] and expand it. We really want to make sure that we progress,” Tudela added.
The Indigenous Cultural Expo was originally set for Oct. 14, 2019, but was postponed due to the onset of Super Typhoon Hagibis.
