GCA gets top seed in middle school caging

Grace Christian Academy earned the top seed in the playoff round of the Public School System Interscholastic Girls Middle School Basketball League after sweeping the regular season yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
The Lady Eagles defeated Mt. Carmel School, 7-5, to finish the preliminaries with a perfect 7-0 record. The Lady Knights ended up with a 5-2 mark to get the No. 2 seed.
Four more matches were played in the last day of the regular season yesterday and results (unavailable at press time) will determine the rankings of the six other teams. Pending the final standings, Hopwood Middle School 1 is at third with its 4-2 slate, and is followed by Hopwood 2 (3-4) Agape Christian School (3-4), Dandan Middle School 2 (3-2), Dandan 1(1-5), and Tanapag Middle School (0-6).
The single-elimination playoffs will take place this Saturday with the following pairings in the first round: 1vs 8; 2 vs7; 3 vs 6; and 4 vs 5.
Meanwhile, before beating MCS, GCA also won against Dandan 1, 32-8; Dandan 2, 15-13; Tanapag, 31-3; Agape, 5-4; Hopwood 2, 24-12; and Hopwood 1, 10-13.
In other results, Mt. Carmel outplayed Hopwood 2, 22-8, in their match last Monday, while Dandan 2 prevailed over Mt. Carmel, 20-19, and Hopwood 2 topped Dandan 1, 16-10.
All eight teams must be at the MHS Gymnasium before 9am, as league organizers would like to stay on schedule, according to PSS Athletic Program director Nick Gross. He added that food service will be provided for all participating students with breakfast at 8am and lunch at 10:30am.
Gross also calls on team officials to refrain from protesting to game officials, as not all violations will be called to keep the matches moving as smoothly as possible. Coaches are encouraged to make sure their students are hydrated throughout the day, as the MHS Gymnasium is still without air-conditioning.
“Please bring adequate amounts of water, as the water available in the hallway is specifically for MHS. Should it run out, it will not be replaced,” Gross said.
