High surf, high-risk rip currents today

A high surf advisory is currently in effect through Thursday afternoon and there is a high risk of rip currents through this afternoon.

Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center-State Warning Point, larger long-period swells are causing hazardous surf in the CNMI.

These northeast swells are projected to persist across the region in the next few days and cause surf to reach hazardous levels on Tinian and Saipan.

Surf will reach hazardous levels of 6 to 9 feet along north facing shores and could peak as high as 10 feet last night before beginning to subside today.

Surf of 6 to 9 feet will cause a high risk of rip currents along north and east facing reefs.

The public is being advised not to venture out along north and east facing reefs and beaches. Breaking waves can knock you down and cause serious injuries. Strong rip currents will be life-threatening. (PR)
