Woman gets 42-day sentence for possession of ‘ice’ residue
Remedio P. Islam, a female ex-convict who was accused of possessing 9.6 gross grams of marijuana and a glass paraphernalia that contained methamphetamine or “ice” residue, pleaded guilty last week and was slapped with a 42-day prison term.
Islam pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a controlled substance as part of a plea agreement with the government.
Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo sentenced Islam to 42 days in prison without parole, with credit for 28 days of time served.
She was required to report to the Department of Corrections on April 15, 2014, to serve the remainder of her sentence. She will be released on April 29, 2014.
Islam was ordered to pay a $2,000 fine and $100 court assessment fee.
According to the plea deal, Islam was found in possession of materials containing a residue of crystal methamphetamine on April 11, 2013, on Saipan.
Assistant attorney general Margo Brown-Badawy represented the government in the case. Chief public defender Douglas Hartig served as counsel for Islam.
Police arrested the 46-year-old Islam in April 2013.
When a police officer asked her who owns the six baggies containing green leafy substances that were seized from her, Islam allegedly replied, “Me, doll. I like to smoke marijuana.”
Police detective Flora Danica B. Aguon stated in her report that she arrested Islam as she and other detectives were executing a search warrant for another defendant in San Antonio.
Aguon said Islam was in possession of a bag that contained six baggies of green leafy substances and other drug paraphernalia.
Aguon said the field test indicated that the green substance was positive for marijuana, while the residue in the glass was positive for methamphetamine or “ice.”
Islam was imprisoned in 1996 for drug related crimes.
