Defending champion Saipan International School Lady Geckos (SIS1) outlasted Marianas High School Lady Dolphins (MHS1) and remained the only undefeated team left in the eight-team varsity division of the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization girls volleyball season.
Playing last Thursday at the MHS Gymnasium, SIS1 fought off MHS1, 25-22, in the first set, but fell to the Lady Dolphins, 23-25, in the second set.
SIS then pulled it together and dominated last year’s runners-up, 15-4, in the deciding third set.
Both squads were undefeated coming into the match.
The win improved SIS1’s flawless record to 6-0, while MHS1 absorbed just its first loss after starting the year with a handful of wins.
In other results, Marianas Baptist Academy notched a nice breakthrough win after an impressive comeback against SIS junior varsity (SIS2).
SIS2 took the opening set, 25-14, but MBA rallied in the second match, 25-15, and slammed the door on the junior Geckos, 15-0, in the final set.
It was MBA’s first actual win on the court as its first came from a forfeit by Saipan Southern High School (0-6). SIS2 fell to an even 3-3 win-loss card.
In addition, the Grace Christian Academy Lady Eagles swept the MHS juniors (MHS2) in three sets, 25-15, 25-9, and 15-3; while KHS was gifted a forfeit victory over the still absent SSHS crew.
GCA is now tied for second place with its 5-1 slate, while KHS and MBA hold identical 2-4 records. MHS2 has one win with five defeats.
The season continues at 4pm on Tuesday with SSHS scheduled to host MHS2 on the north court with KHS calling over MBA on the south end.
Then at 5pm GCA waves in MHS1 on the north side, while SIS1 hosts SIS2 on the south square.
