Sweep for Lady Rays; MCS 1 wins

Saipan Southern High School went 2-0 last Tuesday to climb up the ladder in the 2019-2020 PSS Interscholastic Girls High School Volleyball League.
The Lady Manta Rays defeated Agape Christian School and Marianas High School 1 last Tuesday at the MHS Gymnasium to improve their record to 4-4 and move from eighth to a tie for the four fourth place (with MHS 1) in the team standings going into tomorrow’s last batch of games in the regular season. Saipan Southern has one more game left (versus Mt. Carmel School 2) in the elimination and is in a good position to advance to the playoffs.
League organizers have yet to announce whether the Top 6 or Top 8 teams will move into the double-elimination playoffs this weekend, pending confirmation from Tinian and Rota squads. If only the Top 6 will march on to the next round, the Manta Rays need to win their match tomorrow.
In its pair of games in the penultimate day of the regular season, Saipan Southern took three sets to beat Agape and two to down MHS 1. The Manta Rays lost the closely fought first set, 26-22, but came back in the second with a 25-17 triumph. Saipan Southern then got the win after prevailing in the deciding third set, 15-10. Versus MHS 1, the Manta Rays posted a 25-20 victory in the first set and completed the sweep with a tougher 30-28 win.
In other results last Tuesday, Grace Christian Academy and Saipan International School 1 kept their winning streak after downing MHS 2 and SIS 2, respectively.
SIS 1 cruised to a 25-4 win in the first set of the all-Lady Geckos showdown and had another easy victory in the second, 25-12, for an impressive 8-0 record.
GCA also took only two sets to beat MHS 2, 25-10, 25-18. GCA will square off with SIS 1 tomorrow to determine the top-ranked team going into the weekend’s tournament
Meanwhile, Mt. Carmel 1 and Kagman High School prevailed in the other matches last Tuesday.
The Lady Knights outlasted Agape in three sets, 25-19, 22-25, 15-6, for their 3-5 record, while Agape dropped to a 2-6 mark and may not make it to the playoffs.
Kagman also improved to a 3-5 slate following its 25-22, 25-20 triumph over MHS 2.
