Guam Animals in Need learned yesterday morning that a decapitated body of a dog had been found in the Merizo Cemetery last Friday, Oct. 4. If the dog was illegally killed, GAIN is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of whomever committed the crime.

Based on news reports, Merizo Mayor Ernest Chargualaf learned of the incident from a concerned constituent. His staff confirmed that the dog was decapitated, and the carcass was left on the second level of the crypt. They then collected and disposed of the body. GAIN was not present at the scene.

“We thank Mayor Chargualaf for bringing this horrible incident to light,” said GAIN board president Cyrus Luhr. “This is a violent and disturbing situation, and we hope that someone in the community has more information and is willing to come forward.”

“We’re fed up with animal abuse. People are scared for their pets, their families, and their community. How much longer must we wait for animal welfare to become a priority?” said Luhr. “We can’t turn a blind eye to this sick violence. Once a person decapitates an animal, where does it end? Will more pets be killed? Are people next?”

“GAIN reminds everyone that it’s illegal to kill a dog unless in self-defense, and it’s never legal to torture or mutilate an animal” said Luhr. “It’s hard to imagine a scenario of self-defense that involves decapitating an animal and dumping the body in a cemetery.”

GAIN asks the public to share any information they have by calling the Merizo Mayor’s Office at 828-8312, the GAIN animal shelter at 653-4246, or Guam Crime Stoppers at 477-4357. (PR)
