5.5-magnitude quake occurs near Farallon de Pajaros

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake occurred near Farallon de Pajaros in the Northern Mariana Islands yesterday morning, but there were no reports of it being felt on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota because of its distance.

The Emergency Management Office did not issue a notice to the public about the earthquake. There was also no notice of a tsunami threat.

According to the U.S. Geological Service, the temblor occurred at 8:04am (Saipan time) at a depth of 313.6 kilometers.

The epicenter was about 151 miles west northwest of Farallon de Pajaros, 481 miles north northwest of Saipan, and 236 miles south southeast of the Iwo Jima Vocano Islands in Japan.

On Thursday at 2:42pm, a 5.3-magnitude temblor at a depth of 117 kilometers happened near Rota and jolted the island as well as Saipan and Tinian. There were also no reports of injuries and damage to property in the CNMI.

Later that same day at 5:03pm, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake at a depth of 300.4 kilometers hit some 138 miles west northwest of Farallon de Pajaros, 472 miles north northwest of Saipan, and 246 miles south southeast of Iwo Jima Volcano Islands.
