Deadline to submit Humanities Awards nominees

Have you, or anyone you know, made a significant achievement in the field of humanities this year?

The Northern Marianas Humanities Council, with the Office of the Governor, is reminding everyone to submit their nominations for this year’s Governor’s Humanities Awards.

NMHC executive director Leo Pangelinan encourages the community to submit who they think made an exemplary contribution in the field of humanities on the island.

“We are looking for people who, within the past year, have made achievements in four categories,” Pangelinan said. “This include research and publication in the humanities, preservation of traditional cultural practices, preservation of CNMI history, and those among us who are outstanding humanities teachers, whether they’re teaching in the classroom or outside the classroom.”

The council will also be honoring, with a Lifetime Achievement in the Humanities award, its most prestigious award, to one who has made significant contributions in one or more fields of humanities over the decades, three or more.

This event, held annually in October as part of CNMI Humanities Month, recognizes outstanding contributions to the humanities by individuals and organizations in the community.

This would be in the field of history, philosophy, languages, linguistics, literature, archaeology, jurisprudence, history and philosophy of science, ethics, comparative religion, and social sciences employing cultural anthropology, sociology, political theory, international relations, and other subjects concerned with questions of human value.

Pangelinan said individuals can also self-nominate.

Last year’s Governor’s Humanities awardees were Galvin Deleon Guerrero (preservation of CNMI History), Victor Cabrera (outstanding humanities teacher, classroom setting), Cecilio Raiukiulipiy (outstanding humanities teacher, non-classroom setting), Gordon Marciano (preservation of traditional cultural practices), Don Farrell (research and publication in the humanities), and Scott Russell (lifetime achievement award in the humanities).
