A series of lightning strikes followed by thunderclaps forced the cancelation of the 2019 All Schools Cross Country Championships Series 1 that was set for last Saturday at the Saipan Country Club.
Students from Saipan International School, Mount Carmel School, Agape Christian School, and others came out early despite the pouring rain and strong winds ready to start the season. Unfortunately, about 10 minutes before the start of the race, participants began retreating back to their vehicles due to harsh weather conditions that were not letting up.
Public School System Student Support Services Athletic Program director Nick Gross and Northern Marianas Athletics eventually called off the kick-off race for the safety of the students.
With the cancelation, PSS and NMA are expected to reset Series 1 to a later date and follow the remaining schedule of the qualifiers. The second leg is set for Sept. 21 also at the Saipan Country Club. The third leg will be held on Sept. 28 at the Banzai Cliff Lookout, as requested by Saipan International School, while the fourth qualifier on Oct. 5 will return to the Saipan Country Club. The finale is originally slated for Oct. 18, but may be pushed back to give way to last Saturday’s canceled race.
