Cannabis Commission is complete
The Commonwealth Cannabis Commission, which is tasked with coming up with the rules to regulate cannabis as an industry, is now complete.
The commission, a five-man regulatory body, consists of Saipan representatives Matt Deleon Guerrero, Nadine Deleon Guerrero, and Valentino Taisakan, Rota representative Thomas Songsong, and recently announced Tinian representative Journie Hofschneider.
All commissioners would be sworn in tomorrow, according to Gov. Ralph DLG Torres in a statement yesterday.
“I asked them to do their first official meeting to [designate] their officers. As soon as they do that, they are up and running,” he told Saipan Tribune.
Torres noted during the signing of the cannabis bill amendment, now known as Public Law 21-5, that the 180 days provided to the commission to come up with the regulations would start when they meet for the first time as commissioners.
Even with the six months, Torres is expecting a rough draft in the “next couple of weeks.”
“I ask the [commissioners] to work really hard in first addressing residential permits, commercial permits, and then the medicinal permits. I don’t want the three licenses or permits to halt the process, so whichever is easier to push out, then push [it] out,” he noted. “If they need to piecemeal the permits, then let’s do that and let the cannabis issue and activities go on.”
Just yesterday, it was learned from Tinian Mayor Edwin Aldan that he and the Tinian Municipal Council just concluded hearings for Hofschneider’s appointment.
