20 become certified Motheread/Fatheread teachers

Twenty community members from Saipan, Tinian, and Rota recently completed a course under a family literacy program administered by the Northern Marianas Humanities Council.

The completion makes them the ninth cohort of Certified Teachers for the Adult Course under the Motheread/Fatheread CNMI program since its start in the CNMI back in 1998.

Motheread/Fatheread is administered by the Northern Marianas Humanities Council.

The latest training, held on Aug. 20-22, was held in partnership with the CNMI Public School System and the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library.

The group was comprised of individuals employed in the Public School System, Tinian and Rota Mayor’s Office, Joeten-Kiyu Public Library and parents who have participated in Motheread/Fatheread Adult Courses.

The 20 certified individuals are: Nakita Braganza, Helen Ann Bucher, David Bucher, Connita Camacho, Carrie Camacho, Rose Castro, Caitlyn Crisostomo, Javie Decena, Soley Marie Kaipat, Marjorie Harjani, Laura Manglona, Ivan Mereb, Emilias Palacios, Heidi Posadas, Justise Quitugua, Ignacia Reyes, Vincent Sablan, Dorthy San Nicolas, Juvy Taitano, and Jinhui Jeong.

The 20-hour training was conducted at Aqua Resort Club and led by Motheread national trainers and literacy specialists Evelyn Machtinger and Gwendolyn Hinton, who have returned to the CNMI to teach and train the selected individuals with the copyrighted Motheread curriculum designed for children ages birth to 11.

It had been three years since the last certified training for Motheread adult courses.

The curriculum uses discussion questions and activities to foster creative thinking and problem-solving skills and nurture a love of books in the CNMI family.

Starting tuition to complete and become a Motheread/Fatheread CNMI Certified Teacher for Adults is at $725 per person. Funding for the ninth cohort of the Motheread/Fatheread Institute was provided by Northern Marianas Humanities Council in partnership with the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library and the Office of the Mayor of Tinian and Aguigan. Additionally with completing the Motheread Fatheread Institute, each participant received two college credits from North Carolina State University.
