Chamber meeting tackles 2020 census
The CNMI Census Office did a presentation for the Saipan Chamber of Commerce last Wednesday to discuss specifics of the upcoming 2020 Census and what is being done now to prepare for it.
Commerce Secretary Mark Rabauliman and Central Statistics Division director Justin Andrew told Chamber members how the census will be done and urged businesses to open their doors once enumeration begins, so it can help expedite the process.
Andrew also informed the Chamber that the CNMI will not be asking who is a U.S. citizen and who is not. He was told about this during his meeting with the U.S. Census Bureau.
The CNMI Census Office is currently headed by office manager Claudio Norita. The office will be hosting job fairs on Rota and Tinian this month and on Saipan in October.
The office is mandated to complete hiring office staff by October; another requirement is to hire Saipan field staff and open Rota and Tinian field offices by December.
The office will be hiring a total of 625 full-time/part-time workers: 61 office workers and 564 field positions. Applicants should pass the screening process and a background check by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The office was given a total of $10.7 million to conduct the census and will be in operation until Jan. 31, 2021. A public outreach similar to the presentation will be conducted on a broader scale in January, and field enumeration is to begin in February 2020.
The office is to complete enumeration by June 30, 2020, and all data are to be shipped to Washington, D.C. by July 30, 2020.
