The double session schedule that various schools will implement this school year will affect interscholastic competitions.

Nick Gross, the director for Public School System Student Support Services Athletic Program, said that the initial schedule he created for the different interscholastic sports events will not work because a number of schools will have double sessions. The half-day sessions are carried on from last to this new school year, as Super Typhoon Yutu severely damaged multiple campuses on island and repairs are still underway.

“It has recently come to my attention that PSS has an additional two schools that will be on double session so the current scheduling my not work,” said Gross.

Four schools—Oleai Elementary School, San Vicente Elementary School, William S. Reyes Elementary School, and the Francisco M. Sablan Middle School—had double sessions last school year and will have the same setup, while Kagman Elementary School and Chacha Oceanview Middle School were added on the list.

Gross, who is off-island, as he represented the CNMI to the 20th Oceania Masters Athletics Championships in Queensland, Australia, said that he would update the calendar of sports activities once he returns.

Some of the affected interscholastic competitions include soccer, basketball, volleyball, paddle sports, and track and field.

Meanwhile, Mt. Carmel School athletic director and Commonwealth Coalition of Private Schools Association (CCOPSA) coordinator John Blanco said that CCOPSA will follow the official PSS schedule for their sports competitions this school year.
