The Northern Marianas Humanities Council is inviting everyone to the “Islands Too Beautiful for their Names” presentation by former Saipan resident Dr. Jessica Jordan at the American Memorial Park Theater on Tuesday, Sept. 3, from 6pm to 8pm.

Jordan will talk about the oral histories of the Japanese empire and the Pacific War in the Northern Marianas, based on her doctoral dissertation, which relied largely on interviews with indigenous elders in the Marianas as they lived through the Japanese colonial rule and World War II.

Jordan currently serves as an assistant professor of Regional and Cultural Studies at the Asia Air Force Culture and Language Center at the Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama.

She is a recipient of the 2015 Annual Governor’s Award for Research and Publication in Humanities in recognition of her doctoral dissertation, which she completed in 2015 at the University of California, San Diego.

This event is organized by the Northern Marianas Humanities Council, and funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities. For more information, contact the council at 235-4785.
