Bail modification for man who threatened to kill family

The Superior Court hearing to entertain the request of a man to have his bail modified has been extended another day as the court has yet to appoint a third-party custodian for him.

Peter John Blas, who is accused of threatening to kill his family with a spear gun, was ordered to return to court today for his bail modification hearing.

According to Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo, a third-party custodian is necessary before he can approve modifying Blas’ bail amount and releasing him on bail. He said the third-party custodian would be held responsible for ensuring that Blas complies with the terms of his release.

Upon looking through court documents, there was no bail indicated for Blas and the continuance for bail modification would determine how much Blas would post as bail for him to be released to his third-party custodian.

Blas’ lawyer, assistant public defender Karie Comstock, told the court that they do have a potential third-party custodian, Blas’ grandmother, but she has not spoken with her yet.

Govendo said if Blas’ grandmother is brought before the court, he would approve the bail modification.

According to court information, Blas was arrested for threatening to kill his family members, including his mother, with a spear gun, threatening police with a shootout, and resisting arrest.

Last Aug. 5, police responded to a disturbance in San Vicente, after Blas’ mother reported that Blas was at her house and was threatening to kill her and everyone with her. Blas allegedly threatened the household with a “pachinko” or speargun.

The mother told police that she came home during her lunch break to take Blas to the hospital because he had called her to ask her to take him to get his medication. However, because Blas was nowhere to be found, she left. Blas later threatened her that he would kill her, the members of the household, and himself.

After speaking with Blas, police observed that he was very jumpy and angry. Blas told police he was angry at his mother for refusing to take him to the hospital and for refusing to give him the keys to her car. When police left Blas to talk to his mother, Blas ran into the home, locked all the doors, and shouted that he had guns in the house and he was going to shoot the police.

Blas later calmed down but, when the arrest was being made, Blas struggled and with police and tried to flee.

Blas has been arrested on numerous occasions between June 4 to Aug. 9 for alleged disturbing the peace, assault and battery, riot, criminal trespass, assault with a dangerous weapon, obstruction of justice, and resisting arrest.
