An officer of the Department of Public Safety arrested a man last Aug. 12, 2019, at about 11:54am, for allegedly eluding a police officer.

During a routine patrol, an officer was driving south along Beach Road in Chalan Laulau. The officer merged onto the inner lane after driving through the Quartermaster intersection, before the officer noticed a pink Hummer on the outer lane driving in the same direction. As the Hummer continued traveling beside the officer’s cruiser, the Hummer made a sudden merge into the inner lane, forcing the officer to swerve left and into the oncoming lane.

The Hummer continued to merge until the vehicle was completely on the inner lane. The officer then activated his cruiser’s blue lights and sirens, and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The Hummer then merged went back to the outer lane and continued driving south. The officer notified central dispatch of the description of the vehicle, and the direction they were headed.

After several attempts of requesting that the operator pull to the side of the road, the Hummer activated his right turn signal and pulled into the Oleai Beach Club restaurant. The officer got down his cruiser and asked the operator of the Hummer if he saw and heard the lights and sirens, which the operator acknowledged, and stated that he did not know of any traffic violations he broke. The officer then told the operator that he was nearly forced into oncoming traffic during the operators last maneuver to merge onto the inner lane.

At about 12:10pm, the officer placed the individual under arrest and requested for a separate unit to transport the suspect. The officer then cited the individual for failing to merge in a safe manner, and for eluding a police officer. (PR)
