Only Sean Lee and Robbie Schorr will see action in the opening day of the 2019 Oceania Closed Junior Championships, as Carol Lee drew a bye in the girls singles field yesterday in Fiji.

Sean will have a very tough first round assignment today, as he will challenge the No. 1 seed Chen Dong of Australia at the International Tennis Federation Regional Training Center in Lautoka. The Land Down under played is ranked No. 86 in the world (was once at No. 69) and has been competing in ITF Juniors World Tour in the last four years, holding a career record of 73-35 (singles). The CNMI bet, on the other hand, is relatively new to the circuit, having played only seven singles matches with this week’s Grade 2 tournament the highest-level event he has entered into.

Just like Sean, Schorr is also paired against an Australian player in the opening round. Schorr will be battling Vo and although both are unseeded, the Aussie is slightly favored in the duel, ranking-wise. Vo is ranked No. 571 (highest at 568) and owns an even 23-23 record in singles. Schorr is ranked No. 1,310 and once barged into the Top 1,000 (No. 971 in 2018). The Commonwealth player has a 13-24 mark in singles and made it to the quarterfinals of the Oceania Closed’s doubles event (with Jeremy Guines of Tahiti) last year following his first round exit in the singles play.

The doubles draw in this weekend’s event has yet to be posted.

Meanwhile, Lee will not begin her singles title bid in the Oceania Closed until tomorrow. She is the No. 1 seed in the main draw and will face in the first round the winner in today’s match between Shanelle Iaconi of Australia and Jade Otway of New Zealand.

Also getting a bye in the girls singles field was Aussie Natasha Russell. The No. 2 seed will either square off against her compatriot Sasha Nelson or Kiwi Ana Tamanika.
