NMI Girl Scouts learn a bit of WWII history
Members if the NMI Girl Scouts visited and toured the American Memorial Park last Saturday to learn more about the Saipan landmark, the the historical importance of the battles of Saipan and Tinian, and the plants and animals that are native to the island.
According to troop leader and 2019 Miss Marianas Shannon Sasamoto, the girl scouts were introduced to the park’s visitor center where they watched World War II documentaries and took a tour of the center’s World War II museum. Sasamoto said the troop members raised a lot of questions during the question-and-answer session that the park rangers held for the documentaries.
After that, the troops, accompanied by their troop leaders and parents, explored the park’s many visitor sites, including the Carillon Bell Tower, which is dedicated to the American and Northern Marianas people who gave their lives during World War II.
Unfortunately for the girl scouts, the park’s Court of Honor, which has the park’s flag display, is currently closed off as it is undergoing renovations. The Court of Honor contains a display of the names of the many soldiers and civilians who lost their lives in the battles. The names are inscribed in marble slabs.
Sasamoto said the troops will soon get their first troop badges, and she expects the group to visit other significant sites around the island. She said the troops also hope to do more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities in the future.
