Lower Base fire prompts smoke advisory
The CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management and Department of Public Safety, in conjunction with the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp.’s Division of Public Health, have issued a smoke advisory in response to a fire at the old L&T garment factory in Lower Base Old that is adjacent to a junkyard with old tires and other plastic materials.
Due to the particulate matter contained in the smoke generated from the fire, the potential for air pollution exists.
The Division of Public Health is issuing the following health advisory for people who have respiratory condition.
People who have asthma, emphysema, or bronchitis should stay indoors (except for purpose of evacuating), close their windows, and minimize outdoors activities.
People who are experiencing symptom of respiratory distress should seek medical care immediately.
Anyone who is concerned about the smoke may choose to stay indoors as well.
Residents of Lower Base, Western Garapan all the way to Micro Beach and surrounding area should continue to monitor local news for future advisories from the division.
