$625 fine for Outer Cove litter
On Wednesday, July 31, 2019, the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality’s Division of Environmental Quality received an anonymous phone call complaint about illegal dumping of litter at the Outer Cove Marina near the American Memorial Park.
DEQ litter control apprehending officers responded to the complaint the same day. DEQ litter officers found a total of seven black trash bags, some that were left exposed, and a cardboard box with various household trash (i.e., cans, bottles, napkins, plastic forks and spoons). Inside the trash bags were trolling fish lines, beer cans, plastic utensils, paper plates, paper cups, fish bones (food had been rotting and maggot larvae were present), and soda cans. An estimated amount of 20-25 lbs of trash was found.
The violation was determined to be an intentional violation with greater than 3 lbs of solid waste illegally disposed; it was the violators’ first violation. Penalty would initially be $250; however, because the illegal act was committed near the shoreline, a “sensitive area,” a multiplier of 2.5 is applied to the base penalty, making the final penalty $625.
Help us maintain our marinas by simply disposing of garbage in proper containers. Since not all picnic sites/beaches have trash bins, plan on taking your garbage with you. (PR)
