Robbie Schorr and Sean Lee are staying in Fiji as they are set to join Carol Lee in the Oceania Closed Junior Championships that will kick off this weekend at the International Tennis Federation Regional Training Center in Lautoka.
Schorr and Sean are in the main draw of the boys singles field, which will have its opening matches on Monday, while the qualifying tournament will be held this Saturday. The two CNMI players are on the acceptance list, together with 22 others plus four wild card entries. Four players from the qualifier will complete the main draw of the singles play.
Sean is extending his stay in Fiji after suiting up for the CNMI and the North Pacific Team that played in the 2019 Pacific Oceania Junior Championships. He made it to the quarterfinals of the boys U16 singles and in the championship of the doubles event (with Jimin Woo). Carol’s brother also played in the team event of the POJC.
Schorr, on the other hand, came to Fiji from Samoa where he won a silver medal (men’s doubles) and gold (team event) during the XVI Pacific Games.
Schorr and the Lees’ next tournament is a Grade 2 event that awards 160 world-ranking points to the singles champion and 120 to the doubles winners. Schorr has a combined 18.5 ranking points, while Sean owns two.
Carol has 415 and is the No. 1 seed in the girls division, as she made it to the singles finale in last year’s competition. The CNMI player, who gained a gold medal (mixed doubles with Colin Sinclair) in Samoa, is currently ranked No. 118 in the world and will be defending her title with a bunch of Australian bets and players that also saw action in last month’s Pacific Games.
Joining Lee in the main draw are Samoa’s Eleanor Schuster, Fiji’s Saoirse Breen, and the Solomon Islands’ Zorika Morgan. Tahiti and New Caledonia representatives are also entered in the singles event, while some New Zealand players complete the field. Four players from the Land Down Under joined Lee on the Top 5 list.
