Man accused of robbing tourist waives prelim hearing

The man accused of robbing a tourist and her young daughter as they were walking along Garapan has waived his right to a preliminary hearing.
Carl Steven Aldan, 23, who is charged with robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery after he and a friend allegedly robbed a tourist and her daughter who were walking along Plumeria Avenue in Garapan, waived his right to a preliminary hearing last Monday.
Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph Camacho ordered Aldan to return for his arraignment on Aug. 5.
A preliminary hearing is a proceeding where the defense and prosecution argue whether or not there is probable cause to try a defendant in court.
Aldan was represented by assistant public defender Karie Comstock, while the government was represented by assistant attorney general Heather Barcinas.
According to court information, Department of Public Safety officers responded to a report of a robbery on July 14 at around 7:22pm along Plumeria Avenue in Garapan. The victim was a tourist and her young daughter, who said she was robbed by a man who ran out from a red Nissan Sentra and grabbed her purse while she and her daughter were walking along the road.
Items stolen include a credit card, passports, an Hermes watch, and over $1,000 in cash.
The red Nissan Sentra was later found at a home in Gualo Rai on July 18 and police learned that the vehicle’s alleged driver during the robbery was Wilson Kenneth Caintoy Celeste.
Upon interviewing Celeste, police learned that Aldan was the one who planned the robbery and needed a ride.
Aldan also confessed to the robbery after allegedly calling the police to inform them that he was at the Commonwealth Health Center where his 5-month-old daughter was checked into.
