HS students oriented on possible health careers
Students from various high schools looking to further their knowledge in the health industry recently participated in the 3rd Area Health Education Center Health Summer Program held earlier this year. The program is hosted by AHEC in partnership with the Northern Marianas College Community Development Institute.
Students received introductory courses in nursing and rehabilitation and human services offered under NMC’s degree programs, which fall under the category of allied health, as well as science and math courses. They also received various presentations from fitness coaches, dentists, doctors, nurses, and other health professionals in the CNMI.
Additionally, two trainers from the Hawaii/Pacific Basin AHEC offered the “Create and Navigate Opportunities in Education, or CANOE, Program” during the second week of the program.
The participants of the CANOE program were able to explore career interests, learn how to set goals, write a resume, improve their memory and study skills, and how to manage time and money. They also received certification training under the Youth Mental Health First Aid, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
The AHEC Health Summer program participants also participated in a tour of the Commonwealth Health Center where health professionals employed at the hospital spoke to them about the hospital’s services and the career opportunities in the health career field.
