Docomo Pacific donates $12K worth of cellphones to Alee Shelter, Mañe’lu

TAMUNING, Guam—As part of a collective effort to help some of Guam’s most worthy non-profit organizations, Docomo Pacific is donating over $12,000 worth of cellphones to the Alee Women’s Shelter and Mañe’lu.

The donation includes 127 new handsets including Samsung, Figo, Alcatel, and Caterpillar prepaid phones. The contribution is part of Team 23’s group initiative hosted twice a year by the Dan Dorr Advanced Leadership Program on Guam. Team 23 members are the most recent graduates from the leadership seminar who committed as a group to help raise funds for the Alee Women’s Shelter and Mañe’lu. Team 23, made up of business leaders from Bank of Guam, Docomo Pacific, The Guam Daily Post, Lombard Health, University of Guam, and the Government of Guam, raised over $17,000 in in-kind and cash contributions for the two non-profit organizations.

“We understand the power of communication and how something as small as a cellphone can make a big impact in our lives. This is an incredible opportunity to be a part of Team 23’s initiative to help these worthy organizations that provide a safe-haven for women and help empower our youth. We look forward to getting these devices in the hands of people who could really make the most of them— whether it’s helping them to get jobs, reconnecting with family and friends, or being able to call for help,” said Docomo Pacific president and CEO Roderick Boss.

Mañe’lu, formerly Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guam, is a local non-profit that has been educating and empowering children and families to change their lives for the better for over 15 years. Since 2002, Mañe’lu has been enriching the lives of hundreds of children throughout the island by providing excellence in one-to-one mentoring.

The Alee Women’s Shelter provides emergency/protective shelter for victims of family domestic violence and sexual assault. The shelter serves women, with or without children, who are in crisis from family domestic violence and sexual assault.

Along with making a difference in our community, being a part of Team 23 and the Dan Dorr Advanced Leadership Program has helped strengthen our leadership skills and reinforcing what’s at the heart of our business in order to drive success. Thank you to everyone involved in Team 23 for bringing us together for a good cause,” said Elizabeth Henry, Docomo Pacific vice president of Customer Care and Team 23 member.

Team 23 has held various fundraisers over the past few months to help support the Alee Women’s Shelter and Mañe’lu including the Rock for Change on June 14, a Bank of Guam Carabao Balloon Sale, volunteering for iRecycle at the Agat Mango Festival, and many more.

The cellphone donation was made possible through Docomo Cares, the company’s long-standing community initiative to help non-profit organizations and programs in Guam and the CNMI. (PR)
