The Northern Marianas Descent Corp. held a general membership meeting early Tuesday evening at the Carolinian Utt in Garapan and created nine working committees that cover many of the group’s concerns relating to those of Northern Marianas descent.

The committees are Resources & Development, Social Development, NMD Elected Council, Government, Finance/Fundraising, Marketing/Public Relations, Membership, Events, and Legal committee. Aside from the Social Development Committee, the group was able to select members as chairpersons of each committee.

According to NMDC president John Gonzales, a total of about 40 members showed up at the meeting.

The group was established in March 26, 2013. Its paramount goal is to advocate for all NMDs with respect to their right ownership of public lands under Article 12 of the CNMI Constitution and privately-owned lands that are held by persons of Northern Marianas descent, Gonzales said.

“We believe that the leaders now are representing the interests of not only NMDs, but also non-NMDs,” Gonzales said.

The group’s current goal is to work on the NMD Elected Council, which is headed by Danny Quitugua. This elected council will be similar to the precinct level set up by the political subdivisions, meaning that council members will be elected every two years.
