Tenorio sets 2 swim marks in Samoa

Swimming Center Tsunami Saipan’s Juhn Tenorio posted two new CNMI age group records when he represented the CNMI to the XVI Pacific Games in Samoa early this month.
He timed in at 29.62 seconds in the 50m backstroke qualifying race last July 12 for an unofficial new Commonwealth mark in the boys 15 to 16 age group, surpassing the 29.75 seconds Kai Staal logged on Aug. 1, 2009 in the XIII FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy. Tenorio’s other record was made in the 100m backstroke event last July 13, as he finished the two-loop race in 1:04.52, faster than the old mark (1:05.33) Kensuke Kimura registered on March 23, 2013 during the Saipan Swim Club International Invitational Swim Meet at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool in Marpi.
The 15-year-old’s new CNMI age group records are subject for confirmation from the Northern Mariana Islands Swimming Federation.
Meanwhile, after competing in Samoa, Tenorio just stayed on Saipan for less than a week, as he, fellow Tsunami Saipan swimmer Aika Watanabe, and SSC’s Jinju Thompson and Lennosuke Suzuki are now in South Korea for the 18th FINA World Championships (long course).
Tenorio joined Heat 2 of the qualifying races for the 100m backstroke yesterday at the South Korea Nambu University Municipal Aquatics Center in Gwangju and timed in at 1:04.91. China’s Jiayu Xu earned the fastest qualifying time at 52.85 seconds.
Suzuki had his first event last Sunday, recording 1:20.97 in the 100m breaststroke event. United Kingdom’s Adam Peaty was the top qualifier in the preliminary races after checking in at 57.59 seconds.

The CNMI’s two other swimmers, Thompson and Watanabe, will have their first race today and tomorrow. Thompson is entered in the 200m freestyle event and will be competing against Armenia’s Ani Poghosyan, Tonga’s Charissa Panuve, and Jordan’s Leedia Alsafadi on Heat 1. Watanabe is on Heat 1 of the 50m backstroke race, joining 9 other swimmers—Tajikistan’s Ekaterina Bordachyova, Senegal’s Sophia Disgne, Saints Kitts and Nevis’ Jennifer Harding-Marlin, Malawi’s Tawamika Chang’anamuno, Maldives’ Asihath Sausan, Tanzania’s Shivani Bhatt, Benin’s Nafissath Radji, Yemen’s Nooran Ba Matraf, and Panama’s Nimia Murua.
