About 60 individuals participated in a training last Saturday, July 20, that focused on promoting the importance of developmental screening to monitor the growth of children.
The training, which focused on administering the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, was a partnership between the Commonwealth Health Care Corp.’s Division of Public Health Services’ Maternal and Child Health Bureau and the Child Care and Development Fund.
It was facilitated by MCHB Child Health coordinator Danielle Su, including MCHB staff and childcare providers subsidized by the CCDF.
The Ages and Stages Questionnaire 3rd edition, or ASQ-3, is a parent-completed developmental screening tool used to monitor the developmental performance of children aged 1 month to 66 months in the areas of communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem solving, and personal-social skills.
The training focused on promoting the importance of developmental screening and monitoring utilizing the ASQ-3 screener, and was aimed at participants who had not been previously trained on the ASQ-3.
This training is important in providing CNMI childcare and health providers with the tools to support parents in using the ASQ-3 to monitor their child’s development and identify possible areas where support is needed. At the CHCC Children’s Clinic, developmental screenings are incorporated into well-child visits, and screenings are recommended at regular intervals until a child reaches 66 months (5 1/2 years) of age.
