IAO wants to extend cultural expo to Rota, Tinian
The Indigenous Affairs Office under the Office of the Governor wants to extend the annual Cultural Expo to Rota and Tinian but funding remains an issue.
According to IAO resident director Roman Tudela, IAO has already approached the Tinian and Rota legislative delegations to possibly fund the plan to bring the annual event to Saipan’s sister islands.
“This will be the third year that we will be holding the expo and we want to include Tinian and Rota,” he said.
When asked about the budget, Tudela said it could cost over $25,000 to include Tinian and Rota in the event.
“The first year we did the expo was about $15,000. Second year, [it] cost more because we covered a lot more than the first year. It was bigger—about $25,000,” he said.
Although Cultural Month is September, the expo will still be held in October, like previous years.
The Cultural Expo showcases the CNMI’s traditional cultural practices and highlights the coconut tree and its versatility in the Chamorro and Carolinian cultures.
The expo will have demonstrators who will perform various cooking techniques and weaving techniques using the coconut.
There will also be net throwing, hook tying, names of fish, types of fishing lines, fish preparation, and spearfishing.
