Group seeks other funding options for proposed Earhart monument

A non-profit organization that is pushing to erect a monument on Saipan in honor of legendary aviatrix Amelia Earhart is seeking alternatives to fund the project and a location of its potential site.
The Amelia Earhart Memorial Monument Inc., headed by Marie S.C. Camacho, continues to pursue its goal of erecting a memorial in honor of those who claim to have seen her on Saipan.
According to Site Committee chair Oscar Camacho, the group is looking at a site in Garapan for the monument, near the old Japanese jail and the NMI Museum.
The group is looking at the government for funding, as well as offices such as the Saipan Mayor’s Office for the site. One of the group’s members, Bruce Bateman, suggested that the organization should also appeal to the private sector for funding and finding a suitable site.
According to the organization’s financial reports, they currently have $15,711.05, obtained mostly through donations. They aim to reach $150,000 for the statue’s completion.
“We need to have something valuable that tourists can learn when they come, and this…displays the history of Saipan,” Marie Camacho said.

The group strives to create this monument to let the island’s visitors, inhabitants, and future generations know about the history of Earhart being on the islands before she disappeared.
