Rota woman dies from self-inflicted gunshot wound
A woman in her 30s succumbed from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Rota last Saturday, according to the Department of Public Safety.
Police said DPS Rota responded to a call from an off-duty police officer claiming his wife shot herself with a high-caliber rifle in their residence in Sinapalo.
A source from Rota told Saipan Tribune yesterday that the woman had gotten into a heated altercation with her husband the night before the incident.
The source further stated that in all her years living on Rota, she has never heard of anyone getting shot let alone shooting themselves.
DPS is currently still investigating the incident.
According to a press release from DPS, at about 3:20am last Saturday, dispatch received a 911 call from a police officer who was off-duty stating that his wife had shot herself at their residence in Sinapalo, Rota.
Officers were dispatched to the scene and upon arrival, noticed a motionless female inside the residence. Within close proximity of the victim, officers also noticed a firearm.
Further investigation revealed that the victim suffered an apparent gunshot wound from what appeared to have been caused by a high-caliber rifle. No other apparent injuries were present.
Detectives found that the rifle is a privately-owned firearm and not a department-issued firearm.
Medics arrived on scene and performed a physical assessment on the victim and determined that signs of death were present. The victim was then transported to the Rota Healthcare Center where Dr. Gregory Kotheimer pronounced the victim to dead at 6:01am.
