CAO, DYS summer camp off to strong start
The Carolinian Affairs Office, in collaboration with the Division of Youth Services, kicked off its first of two Summer Youth Empowerment Camps yesterday at the Tanapag Youth Center.
DYS Family Youth Enhancement Program coordinator Colleen Diaz informed Saipan Tribune that the camp has 63 total registrants. This camp will be until July 18, with each day being from 7:30am to 11:30am.
Both camps are featuring sports, art & crafts, and presentation sections for participants.
Participants will be playing various sports like basketball, kickball, baseball, and flag rugby in a rotating schedule each day.
The arts & crafts section focuses on weaving, bead-making, and painting.
Participants are also given lessons about mental health awareness through presentations provided by the Garrett Lee Smith Youth Suicide Prevention Office and the CNMI Crisis Counseling.
Snacks are provided for children from the United States Department of Agriculture Summer Food Service Program.
Diaz also stated that a total of 15 youth volunteers will be helping participants through the camps.
The second camp will be from July 22 to Aug. 1 at the San Isidro Youth Learning Center and will observe the same schedule as the first camp.
Both CAO and DYS would like to thank the Department of Cultural Affairs Sports and Recs, the Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture, the GLS Youth Suicide Prevention Office, the Commonwealth Health Care Corpo., and other agencies that helped make the camps possible.
