Fire engulfs COP debris
A debris fire engulfed a portion of the Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort property yesterday, but firemen from the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services were able to ensure that the fire didn’t threaten neighboring homes. There were no reports of injuries or fatalities.
As of 6:13pm yesterday, DFEMS had yet to confirm whether the fire in Koblerville had been fully extinguished. DFEMS later said that because of the amount of debris and what the debris consists of, they were unable to give an exact determination as to when they would be able to extinguish the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to DFEMS spokesman Derek Gersonde.
He said that a possible structure fire was reported to the Department of Public Safety at about 12:52pm. DPS, in turn, immediately contacted DFEMS.
DFEMS later confirmed at the scene that it was not a structure fire but a debris fire.
Gersonde said the first responding units arrived on scene at 1:02pm.
DFEMS spokesperson Bobbie Jean Taisacan said the fire consisted of Super Typhoon Yutu debris collected from the Coral Ocean Point, consisting of damaged golf carts, oil, tires, metal, building materials from COP structures, and more.
DFEMS was able to ensure that the fire burned out within the vicinity and, according to Gersonde, was not a threat to neighboring homes.
The closest residence to the fire was the COP barrack that houses many COP employees.
Representatives from the nearby Winners Laundry was also present and they brought with them 3,000 gallons of water as a donation.
Before this, the last structure fire on Saipan occurred at a massage parlor in Susupe, above the Winchell’s branch in front of Kanoa Resort. No one was injured in that fire.
