Repairs to local court to be completed by 2020

The CNMI Judiciary expects the repair work on the Guma Hustisia building to be completed by late 2020.
According to a video posted by Superior Court director Sonia A. Camacho, the widespread destruction of Super Typhoon Yutu in October 2018 stalled the building’s re-opening.
Fortunately, she said, all projects leading to the building’s re-opening continue and the Guma Hustisia’s re-opening could be in late summer 2020.
“[We are hoping for] the mold remediation and air-conditioning replacement to be completed by late summer of 2020 but, again, these projects will be contingent on the Federal Emergency Management Agency repair on the damage of the building,” she said.
Camacho said the contract for the heating ventilation and air-conditioning system will be completed on July 5. Shortly after, construction can begin once a contractor takes on the project.
“We have a mechanical engineer consultant on board that has been assisting the Judiciary since January 2019 but the construction documents for the HVAC system are anticipated to be completed by July 5. We will be entering the solicitation phase shortly after to select the contractor projects who will be taking on this project,” she said.
As for the mold remediation, ducts throughout the building will be replaced.
Camacho said the Judiciary’s main priority is to repair the building’s skylights first to prevent water and mold from entering the building and exposing the ducts to more mold.
“Super Typhoon Yutu completely restarted our progress for the mold remediation and the HVAC repair and upgrade. When the skylights were damaged, it became critical to first repair the skylights to prevent further water and moisture intrusion into the building and other related mold issues. Proceeding without this repair would result in newly replaced HVAC ducts being exposed to the same environmental conditions that promoted the spread of mold throughout the system to begin with,” she said.
