Carol earns highest world ranking

The CNMI’s Carol Lee is now ranked No. 114 in the world, climbing up to the ladder of the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors following her finals appearance in the 55th Astrid Bowl Charleroi/Belgian International Junior Championships in Belgium late last month.
The ranking is Lee’s highest so far after getting the No. 119 spot in March following her singles title win against No.1 seed Aubane Droguet of France in the ITF/CAT North African Circuit.
The 17-year-old then fell to No. 126, as she was idle for weeks before heading to Europe for a series of tournaments in Italy and Belgium. She dropped several notches more in the world rankings after her so-so performance in four tournaments in Italy, but made the big leap when she debuted in the Belgian International Junior Championships with a bang.
The Commonwealth bet and her teammate, Skyler Marie Grace Grishuk, won three matches in the Grade 1 tournament to make it to the finals. The duo eventually lost to Russia Veronika Pepelyaeva and Avelina Sayfetdinova in the finals, 4-6, 2-6.
Despite the defeat, Lee earned her highest ranking points, as she and Grishuk were awarded 130 markers each for getting the runner-up honors in the Belgian tournament.
Lee’s total doubles ranking points has reached 300 and adding her 345 in the singles, the CNMI junior player now has combined ranking points of 420 (300/4+345) and moved up more than 50 notches after her notable showing in Belgium. She started the season ranked No. 175.
The four-time Northern Marianas Sports Association/Tan Siu Lin Foundation Fame Student-Athlete of the Year awardee is on her last year in the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors and holds career records of 100-47 in singles and 61-47 in doubles. This season, she has a 10-7 slate in singles and 4-9 in doubles.
After her series of tournaments in Europe, Lee is scheduled to return to Fiji to train in the regional facility and prepare for the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa where she will be anchoring the CNMI Team.
