Man who choked girlfriend gets a year in prison

The man who pleaded guilty last Tuesday to choking his girlfriend in a dispute over betel nut chew was sentenced to a year in prison.
Michael Cabrera Sanchez, 41, was sentenced to a one-year imprisonment term, with six months suspended.
Sanchez was given credit for the 72 days he had already served and was released from the Department of Correction after the sentencing.
Sanchez was also ordered to serve a three-year probation following his release.
While on probation, Sanchez is required to pay a $100 fee, $25 assessment fee, and a probation fee that is still to be determined by the Office of Adult Probation.
Sanchez is also required to follow all probation conditions, including registering for anger management, evaluation by the Community Guidance Center focusing on alcohol and drug assessment, and to staying away from alcohol and illegal drugs or controlled substances.
Sanchez was charged with assault and battery after allegedly choking his girlfriend and throwing a shoe at her in front of their children over betel nut.
According to Saipan Tribune archives, police responded to an alleged domestic violence at Lao Market in Chalan Kanoa back in April.
The victim told police that her boyfriend, Sanchez, had just woken up that morning and asked her for cigarette and betel nut. When she told him she had none, Sanchez allegedly got mad at her and choked her in front of their two children. The victim told police she was breathing but barely.
Following the incident, Sanchez allegedly threw a shoe at the victim’s face when she said she’d call the police. The victim then went to Lao Market to call the police but Sanchez followed her and allegedly hung the phone up as the victim was talking to police.
The Lao Market manager told police that she heard the victim talking to police when Sanchez came in and grabbed the phone from her. The manager told police that she overheard Sanchez ask the victim, “Why are you calling the police, I was just asking for betel nut.”
Sanchez then left but the victim remained at the store. The manager said the police arrived after about five minutes.
