Comets avenge loss to Little Legals

The Comets got back at the Kagman Little Legals after eking out a 7-4 victory in their Majors division game in the 2019 Saipan Little League Baseball last Sunday at the Capitol Hill Ballfield.

Relief pitcher Isidro Lizama took over the mound in the fourth inning and threw a one-hitter to lift the Comets to victory. He gave up no runs and just a single to Santiago Seman and struck out seven batters. The closer had back-to-back strikeouts at the top of the sixth inning and the Comets ended the game early after getting the third out in the ensuing play with Jared Muna going out on a 4-3 play.

Lizama also had a two-run single at the bottom of the third inning where the Comets regained the upper hand after scoring six runs.

The Comets, who lost to the defending champions in the first of the double-round regular season, led after two complete innings off Jesus Tyquenco’s sacrifice fly at the bottom of the second inning, but lost the driver’s seat when the Little Legals delivered four runs at the top of the third. Austin Diaz had a two-run triple for the Little Legals, who notched two unearned runs to grab the lead.

However, the Little Legals’ stay on top was short-lived, as the Comets countered at the bottom. Besides Lizama’s two-run single, Patty Mendiola also had a crucial hit for the Comets, as her triple drove in three runners.

With the Comets retaking the lead, Lizama, who came it for Justin Camacho, stepped up and shut down the Little Legals to hand their team a 6-3 record—the same mark the Talaabwogh Falcons and McDonald’s hold. The Little Legals are now 7-2 and still on top of the six-team field with one game left in the regular season, making the battle for the pennant an open race among four squads.
