The CNMI’s Carol Lee won both her singles and doubles opening matches in the Torneo Internazionale “Città Di Santa Croce” Mauro Sabatini in Italy.

In the singles play, unranked Lee was pitted against Peru’s Dana Guzman and needed three sets to survive the opener last Sunday at the Tennis Club Santa Croce Via Poggio Adorno in Santa Croce Sull’Arno, Tuscany.

The Commonwealth junior player prevailed in the first set, 6-1, but was clobbered by Guzman in the second, 6-0. Then in the deciding third set, Lee regained her bearings and eked out a 6-4 triumph to advance to the second round against Colombia’s Antonio Samudio. The No. 11 seed drew a bye in the opening round.

In the doubles event, Lee teamed up with Puerto Rico’s Lauren Anzalotta Kynoch and they took only two sets to beat Italy’s Alessandra Anghel and Teresa Scardigli, 6-1, 6-0. With the sweep, Lee and Kynoch arranged a second round match against the pair of Ukraine’s Liubov Kostenko and Russia’s Taisya Pachkaleva, who got a bye in the first round to earn a free trip to the next phase of the competition.

The Torneo Internazionale “Città Di Santa Croce” Mauro Sabatini is a Grade 1 tournament that awards as much as 280 ITF Juniors World ranking points to the singles champion and 210 to the doubles winners. It is Lee’s third event in Italy after debuting in the 36th Torneo Bayer di Salsomaggiore late April and in the 27th International Tournament “Città di Prato” early this month.
