Kang is named overall winner at Guam science fair

Four students in Guam ruled the 41st Annual Islandwide Science Fair, which drew more than 400 participants from Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands last May 11 at the University of Guam science building.
Daniel Kang, a junior at John F. Kennedy High School, was named the High School (Division 4) overall winner with a science project whose title was quite a mouthful: “Novel Graphene Nanoplatelet and Ketjenblack Embedded Pigmentless Acrylic Emulsions for Next Generation Flexible Electronics.”
As his prize, Kang will attend NASA Space Camp with the assistance of major sponsors, including Marianas Energy Co., IP&E Shell Guam, and the UOG Sea Grant and Guam EPSCoR programs.
The Middle School (Division 3) overall winner was Vaishnavi Khandelwal, an 8th grader at St. John’s School, with a project titled “Analyzing The Antimicrobial Properties of Murraya Koenigii Leaves.”
Jay Whitman, in 5th Grade at Andersen Elementary School, was the overall winner in Grades 3-5 (Division 2), with a project titled, “Our World of Bacteria.”
Nick Carter Duhaylungsod, in second grade at Santa Barbara Catholic School, was the overall winner in Grades K-2 (Division 1) with a project called, “Salty and Bright.”
Other division and category winners will receive trophies and additional prizes at the awards ceremony to be held 6pm on May 25, 2019, at the Guam Hilton Resort & Spa.
Novel inventions and exciting experiments lined the classrooms and hallways as the participants representing public, private and Department of Defense Education Activity schools competed in the science fair. (Saipan Tribune)
